The magic of Art Deco style
Art Deco is a style of visual arts, architecture and design that appeared in France pre-World War 1 and is still popular today.
It combines modernist styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials, representing luxury, glamour, exuberance and progress (def. Wikipedia).
To create the look and feel of this era for your home, here are some pointers:
Art deco works very well with older federation-style homes, renovated to create eye-catching features that capture the magic of a bygone era, with a focus on using quality materials that last. It is also not subject to design trends or fads, as this style is timeless.
Plan the design elements you like from the era and have these elements consistently wind their way through your decorative elements of your home and exterior features. For instance, if you are using the arches or fan look, make sure your brick work reflects the curves or add features from other materials such as concrete, iron or timber, to ensure it all blends well.
Use different textures and materials to create points of interest and have fun with the theme. The most successful implementations of Art Deco we have seen, have been through the use of steelwork, art glass, rendering and even ornamental plaster features around a common design theme.
You don't need to spend a fortune to create the luxury look and feel. You can plan to get the look at low cost. Look for furniture or salvaged architectural features from that era. These pieces can be repainted or repaired to look as good as new.
A small feature such as a pedestrian gate and letterbox (shown), to match the stained glass work in the front door can achieve a great result that won't break the budget.
