Coastal
Commissioned metalwork inspired by the coast
Inspired by the movement, colour and character of Western Australia's coastline, Wayne's Coastal commissions bring art into the architecture of the home.
From gates and entrances to screens and functional artworks, each piece begins with the place, the people who live there and what they need the work to do.
Sometimes the result is purely beautiful. Sometimes it solves a problem.
Often, it does both.

When the solution became the artwork
The owners of this oceanfront Mandurah home loved their balcony and its outlook.
There was just one problem.
The afternoon sun made the space hot and unusable. An awning seemed like the obvious solution - until they considered what it would do to the view they loved.
Then they met Wayne.
What began as a conversation about creating a glass artwork with a marine scene inspired by their Mandurah surroundings became something much more unusual.
Wayne designed the artwork to hinge out across the balcony when needed, providing shade from the afternoon sun. When the sun moved on, it could be folded back against the wall, where it became a piece of marine-inspired wall art at night.
The design also provided an additional layer of security across the balcony when the owners were away.
And as the sunlight passed through it, the artwork cast a beautiful cool blue glow into the home.
Shade when they needed it.
Security when they were away.
Art when they simply wanted to enjoy it.
One piece, designed specifically for the way they lived.

Made for the Architecture
Part of the home
Wayne designs commissioned work to belong to its surroundings. Proportion, architecture, landscape and the way the entrance is used all influence what the final piece becomes.
The aim isn't simply to make a beautiful door.
It's to make something that looks as though it was always meant to be there.

Have an idea of your own?
Wayne's commissions often begin with a problem, an idea, a place, a theme - or sometimes just a conversation.
